Peanut Feeders for Birds

Peanut feeders are usually nothing more than a simple tube feeder.  Instead of a solid tube, however, a stiff wire mesh forms the tube. The holes in the mesh just small enough to keep the peanuts from falling out. Shelled peanuts are offered in the peanut feeders.

Jays will also take peanuts in the shell. Its quite a site to see a Steller’s Jay swallow a peanut whole.

Quick Hits

Cooper's and Sharp-shinned Hawks feed on other birds. They will sometimes hang around feeders in hopes of capturing an easy meal.  They only take what they need to eat, so they are not going to eat any more song birds by visiting your feeder station.  If you are concerned, take down your feeders for 3-4 weeks.  The raptors will usually move on.
